Why page speed still matters (without the hype)

Some business owners obsess over page speed like it’s the one thing standing between them and success. Others ignore it completely, treating it as a technical detail that doesn’t touch the bottom line. Both are mistakes, just in opposite directions.

Here’s the honest middle ground. Page speed is real. It’s a usability factor, because people genuinely leave slow pages, and it’s a ranking factor, because Google has said so directly. But it’s also just one factor among many. A site that loads fast but says nothing useful, or looks dated, isn’t going to outperform a well-designed, well-written site that’s a couple seconds slower. Speed on its own doesn’t decide anything. Neglecting it, on the other hand, is a real cost.

Why mobile speed carries extra weight

Since 2018, Google has been rolling out what it calls mobile-first indexing, and confirmed the rollout complete across the web in 2023. In plain terms, that means Google evaluates and ranks your site based on its mobile version, not its desktop version. So when your mobile pages are slow, that carries more direct weight on how you rank in search than a slow desktop experience does. It’s not that desktop performance doesn’t matter. It’s that mobile is now the version Google is actually looking at.

What the research actually says

Run your own site through the tool above and you’ll get real, live data straight from Google, not an estimate. To put that data in context, here’s what Google’s own research, and the studies they’ve cited, say about page speed’s effect on visitors.

Google's own research (900,000 mobile sites, 2017)
53% of visitors will leave a mobile page that takes longer than 3 seconds to load

A study Google has cited, not Google's own data
Mobile pages loading 1 second faster saw conversion rates increase by up to 27%. Bounce rates ranged from 13% on loads under 3 seconds to almost 60% on loads over 9 seconds

Real, named case studies Google has published
money.co.uk cut load time from 11.7s to 3.5s; click-through rate rose from 12% to 32%, bounce rate fell from 80% to 52%. Kempinski Hotels saw an 11% increase in conversion rate after a speed-focused redesign

I’ll be straightforward about that middle row. It’s a real number, from a real study, and Google has referenced it themselves. But it comes from one company’s data set from 2015, not a universal law about your specific business. I don’t build my recommendations around a number like that, and I don’t think you should make decisions based on it either. It’s worth knowing it exists. It’s not worth losing sleep over.

Why speed is the foundation of a website that actually works

When I build a website, I think of it as four layers stacked on top of each other: discoverability, usability, brand and positioning, and finally the aesthetics and calls to action that turn a visitor into a lead. Each layer depends on the one underneath it. A beautifully designed page with confusing navigation won’t convert, and a clearly organized page that’s slow to load never gets the chance to prove itself, because a share of your visitors are already gone before they see any of it.

That’s where speed lives, at the base of that stack, as part of discoverability. It’s not the most exciting layer to talk about, but it’s the one everything else depends on. I’ve been optimizing it since the days of image sprites, and because I’m also the person who builds and maintains the site, it’s built into clean code from day one, not a plugin bolted on afterward.

If this test turned up more than you expected, sometimes the real fix isn’t a few tweaks, it’s a foundation that needs to be rebuilt properly. That’s what a custom website build is for. If you’d rather just talk it through first, that conversation starts below, where you can schedule a call.
